Welcome to the Washtenaw Wanderers Walking Club.

We are a non-profit organization with the mission to plan, organize, and host free, family-friendly, non-competitive, public walking events in Washtenaw County and Southeastern Michigan. All ages and abilities are welcome to attend our events. Membership is not required.

Our members range in age from families with young children to senior citizens. Club membership is $5/person or $10/household. New members also receive a New Walker's Packet from the AVA.

We meet on the third Wednesday (starting June 2011) of each month (except for December and snowstorms) at the REI store in Ann Arbor (
970 West Eisenhower Parkway, Ann Arbor, MI 48103) from 7-8:00 pm.

We are also known as the Washtenaw Wanderers Volkssporting Club, since most of our events adhere to the guidelines set by and sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association (AVA), the national organization of the Internationaler Volkssportverband (IVV - International Federation of Popular Sports).

Volkssporting was started around the border areas of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in the late 1960s. Since then, clubs have been formed worldwide, with over 350 in the United States. Volkssporters travel the world to participate in sanctioned events in order to earn credit for the distance walked, biked, swimmed, skated, skiied, or snowshoed (depending on the event offered) as well actual participation in an event.

The most common Volkssport is a 10K walking event, known as a Volksmarch or Volkswalk. Because it is our goal to attract participants of all ages and abilities, we also strive to offer a 5K alternative route.

We hope to see you at our future events.
